Narrative Development

Investigators

Overview

This broad line of research examines the narrative development of both P2 (normally developing) and P3 (brain-injured) children. We examine not only children’s speech but also their gestures.

Narratives are collected through multiple methods: through cartoons (Jerry, Tweety, Maus), through a story stem (Story Stem), through a picture book (Frog Story), in naturalistic interactions (Tiny Narratives).

Status

Coding will continue during Summer 2012. Analysis will start Fall 2012.

Archive

The data files and other documents associated with this study can be found in Ece’s working directory on the LDP file server (Analord) in the Groups volume:

afp://analord.spc.uchicago.edu/Groups/Grads/Ece/Narrative

We’ll abbreviate the server/path location to Ece’s working directory as $ECE and $ECE/Narrative as $STUDY.

This study collected narrative descriptions offered by child subjects after presenting them with various stimuli:

  • Cartoons
    • Jerry
    • Tweety
    • Maus
  • Story Stem
  • Picture Book (Frog Story)
  • Naturalistic Interactions (Tiny Narratives)

Except for Maus, each of the stimuli listed above have their own set of coded transcripts, coding manuals, and coding templates. These can be found under the respective directories in the $STUDY directory ($ANALORD/Groups/Grads/Ece/Narrative):
